Sinus Tarsi

syndrome

Sinus tarsi syndrome (STS), also known as sinus tarsitis, is pain and tenderness over the outer side of the ankle due to inflammation.

Body image

TENDERNESS

On the front outer side of your ankle 

Tenderness
Pain on movement

REDUCED RANGE OF MOTION

In the morning, improves as day goes on

Loss of function
Localised pain
Swelling

LOSS OF FUNCTION

Stiffness in the morning 

Extra info

 SWELLING

In your foot

Reduced ROM
Instability

INSTABILITY

Especially on uneven ground, jumping and changing direction

Pain is relieved by rest

 PAIN ON MOVEMENT

While walking, running, turning ankle in, pointing toes down and going up stairs 

LOCATION OF PAIN

Front of the lateral malleolus (bone on outside of ankle)

LOOK OUT...

Symptoms like redness and bruising may appear different on different coloured skin. 

Bruising can sometimes be an indication that something more sinister is going on internally; if in doubt, get it checked out!

A visual deformity in these examples is different to swelling.
