Impingement in the shoulder is due to the narrowing of the space between the acromion (bony structure in the front of shoulder) and the humerus (bone of the upper arm), where the rotator cuff tendons pass through.

LOOK OUT...

Symptoms like redness and bruising may appear different on different coloured skin. 

Bruising can sometimes be an indication that something more sinister is going on internally; if in doubt, get it checked out!

A visual deformity in these examples is different to swelling.
